Never Lend to Friends or Co-sign for a Loan

Nehemiah 5:1-5

Why We Should Not Lend To Friends or Co-sign For a Loan

  1. Lending turns a friend into a servant (Prov. 22:7; Psa. 50:15)
  2. Biblical "lending" is charitable, not commercial (Deut. 23:19, 15:1-2; Psa. 37:21; Prov. 19:17; Luke 6:30-36)
  3. Usury is consistently condemned by God (Exo. 22:25; Deut. 23:20; Lev. 25:36-38; Eze. 22:12-13; Psa. 15:1,5; Prov. 28:8; Eze. 18:10,13; I Cor. 5:8-13)
  4. Interest bites your friend like a snake
  5. Interest causes friends to secretly curse you (II Cor. 8:14; Romans 12:13; Gal. 6:10; Jer. 15:10)
  6. Only strangers should be charged with interest (Deut. 23:20, 15:3-4, 15:6; Luke 19:23; Matt. 25:27; I Cor. 5:10)
  7. Co-signing is a dangerous form of lending
  8. God consistently condemns co-signing (Prov. 6:1-5, 11:15, 17:18, 20:16, 27:13, 22:26-27)
  9. Co-signing is an unscriptural partnership (Luke 6:42; II Cor. 6:14)
  10. Co-signing exposes you to swindlers
  11. Lending or co-signing overrides deeper problems (Prov. 10:22)
